The dust in the Lhandahir Catacombs stirred as a wooden ladder invaded the land of the dead. Rats scurried away into the shadows where only the most nefarious lurked, yet the bones remained in silence, waiting to alert the evil of the intrusion. The oppressive energy down there was heavier the second time around. It was as though the shadows could pre-empt the future theft, knowing they would take something from its clutches.

Ashim, Bahlir and Orison climbed down the ladder much quicker than the last time they entered the soulless place. Orison dusted herself off and looked at Ashim for guidance; he gave her a dip of his chin as he illuminated the sconces on the wall. Bahlir checked their equipment.

She steeled her nerves as Ashim and Bahlir conversed in Karshakir and glanced back at her every so often, as she toyed with the empty pouch around her neck. Orison clutched Ashim’s arm for comfort as they began their journey into the unknown. The ever-increasing ominous presence had Orison rolling her shoulders to shake it off. Whatever it was, it wasn’t happy about their second visit.

Orison had grown so familiar with the crunching underneath her boots that she no longer grimaced at the floor of bones; nor did she want to scream and run for the hills. The more alert she became of the sinister aura on her back, the more she clutched Ashim’s shirt until her knuckles were white. Angering an ancient ghost wasn’t a good omen for their task ahead.

Orison inched away from scorpions scuttling along the mud walls. She shied away from the rats that scurried between her feet; the vermin that made homes in the eye sockets of skulls. It took everything to press on and clear her thoughts of running to the safety of the ladder.

They navigated their way down the maze of Lhandahir Catacombs and multiple corridors that came with it. The trio ignored the growing number of bones that spread out around them at all angles. At the dead end, where the hole to the necklace sat, Bahlir came to a stop. He stood on his tiptoes and peered through before turning to Orison. Her stomach sank to her feet like it was being pulled under by quicksand. Everything within her screamed not to take that step. Yet her trembling hands let go of Ashim and she stepped closer to Bahlir.

Bahlir interlocked his fingers and crouched down. “I will help you.”

Exhaling a breath, Orison placed her foot on Bahlir’s joined hands. He pushed Orison up and she belly crawled into the small space; to her surprise, it was large enough for her. On the other side of the tunnel, gold glinted in her direction, beckoning her to come forward and seal her fate.

“Be safe,” Ashim called through.

I will, she said to his mind.

Orison glanced over her shoulder at the two men, then crawled towards the golden hue. The sand beneath her hands slithered between her fingers, the feel of bones scraped against her nails underneath the coarse surface.
